Welactin - Omega 3 Canine
250ml by Nutramax
Welactin is a specially
prepared salmon oil manufactured to maintain a high content of Omega 3 fatty
acids in a very tasty form for your dog.
Made by Nutramax, the same
company that makes "Cosequin", you know you are getting a quality
product, using the highest standards in ingredients and manufacturing processes.
Omega 3 fatty acids are
the “good health” fatty acids that you may have read about for human
heart health. The two predominant Omega 3 fatty acids are docosahexaenoic acid
(DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).
Welactin has Omega 3 fatty
acids that have been shown in veterinary research to perform many functions
including helping support a normal heart rhythm. Omega 3 fatty acids help support
many other systems in the body too, including kidney function, the immune system,
and skin and coat health.
Welactin contains a higher
proportion of the Omega 3 fatty acid DHA than do other fish oil products. This
is ideal as DHA has a function in many organ systems including the early development
of the brain. DHA has been shown to have beneficial effects on brain function,
learning and vision.
Welactin has far-reaching
effects throughout the body and can help your dog “turn back the clock”!
Another type of fatty acids
are Omega 6 fatty acids. While the “natural diet” of animals in
the past contained more balanced levels of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids,
most pet foods today have higher amounts of the Omega 6 fatty acids relative
to the amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids.
Welactin, by providing the
Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, helps to re-establish the balance between these
two kinds of fatty acids.
Why might my veterinarian
recommend Welactin instead of fish oil capsules or other liquids?
- Fish oil in different
capsule and liquid products can vary in palatability (whether and how much your
dog will like the taste), and, in a taste test, dogs loved Welactin! Most dogs
actually preferred their food with Welactin than without.
- Welactin has been shown
to be absorbed. In a carefully designed research study, Welactin was shown to
increase levels of DHA in the blood five times over baseline in dogs.
- Welactin has been evaluated
for safety. No side effects and no adverse effects on bloodwork values were
seen in dogs given Welactin in a study. As heavy metal contamination is a potential
problem with any fish oil products,
Welactin is monitored for the presence of heavy metals.
- Welactin contains what
is listed on the label in the amounts listed (it meets label claim). There is
less oversight for
supplements (compared to drugs), and a recent report showed that over 25% of
fish oil products contained less DHA than what was listed on the label.
- Fish oil products have
the potential to turn rancid (they will then have a foul odor). In addition
to containing
vitamin E, which helps protect against this, Welactin contains other ingredients
to help maintain freshness and stability.
How do I give Welactin?
Welactin is a tasty liquid
and is easily administered over your pet’s food. The box contains a pump,
making it easy to apply the product over your pets food.
Please follow the administration
instructions, which are based on your dog’s weight, found below and on
the label. In most cases, Welactin is administered long-term for continuing
benefits.
